Steel hangar and structure design from calculations to fabrication drawings

What we design

We handle hangars, warehouses, canopies, light bridges and steel frames for factories. The work starts with the structural system, portal frames or trusses and the bracing layout, then member sizing and the structural response under the loads.

Examples of this kind of work are the Jazan inspection shed and the steel structures with beams and cantilevers project.

The calculation report describes the structural model, dead, live and wind loads, load combinations, and the stresses and deflections of each member with its utilisation ratio. Every assumption is written plainly, such as the cladding type and weight or the presence of suspended equipment, so your consultant can review it easily.

Connections and fabrication drawings

The connection is the most common weak point in steel work, so each connection type is modelled in IDEA StatiCa under the actual forces, with checks on welds, bolts and plates. Fabrication drawings then follow, with piece marks, weight lists and details, plus a 3D model that shows clashes before cutting.

• Piece lists with quantity, length and weight.
• Shipping and assembly marks on the drawings.

For large hangars we look at the span, the number of frames and their spacing, since a tapered frame may be lighter than a prismatic one. Where useful we compare two alternatives and show the difference in weight, because weight drives a large part of fabrication and transport cost.

What we review before delivery

• Wind direction and light roof loads at the edges.
• Stability of the side frame and the longitudinal bracing.
• Column to footing interface details.
• Consistency of weights between calculations and drawings.

An independent second engineer checks the calculations and drawings, and every load assumption is stated plainly in the report.

For footings we provide column reactions and tension and shear forces on the anchor bolts, and we size footings at calculation level where a soil report is available. Anchor bolt layouts go to the fabricator so footings are poured with accurate bolt positions and columns are erected without field changes.

Price

Steel structure design with calculations costs 15 SAR per m2, minimum 8,000 SAR. Connection design in IDEA StatiCa costs 400 SAR per connection type, minimum 2,000 SAR. Fabrication drawings and the 3D model cost 200 SAR per ton, minimum 2,500 SAR. All prices are before VAT. Worked example only, for a 1,200 m2 hangar: 1,200 x 15 = 18,000 SAR; for 40 tons of steel: 40 x 200 = 8,000 SAR. VAT of 15% applies in KSA.

The delivery date is fixed in the quote according to scope. Calculations and drawings are prepared for review, approval and stamping by your licensed consultant or engineer in the project country; we do not stamp drawings for authorities.

To start, send the general dimensions, the use, the project location and the soil report if one exists. We review them free of charge and set the scope: design only, or design with connections and fabrication drawings. After agreement we deliver the calculation report first for your consultant to review, then start the fabrication drawings after their comments, which limits rework at the fabricator.
